Officer(s) involved: Long Beach Unified School District School Safety Officer (SSO) Eddie F. Gonzalez
What prompted the initial contact with police? While patrolling Millikan High School on September 27, 2021, SSO Gonzalez broke up a fight between Manuela Rodriguez, who was not a student at the school, and 15 year old girl.
Actions taken by subject towards police: After Gonzalez broke up the fight, Rodriguez jumped into a vehicle operated by a male who then drove past Gonzalez, nearly hitting him, as they fled the scene.
Reactions by the police: SSO Gonzalez fired two shots at the car as it drove next to him, at least one of which hit Rodriguez in the back seat.
Outcome of investigation into the fatal police incident: SSO Gonzalez was fired the next day and has been charged with murder.
What could the subject have done that day to still be alive today? Not be at a High School she was not a student of; not fight with a student of the school; not flee the scene until the SSO says she was free to leave.
Justified Use of Deadly Force? NO, while the vehicle is reported as driving close to SSO Gonzalez, the fact that it was next to him and not coming at him means he did not have reason to believe his life was in jeopardy and therefore deadly force was not justified.
