What prompted the initial contact with the killer? At approximately 6:00 a.m. on February 2, 2021, FBI Special Agents conducted a search warrant on a home owned and occupied by David Huber, for his suspected involvement with child pornography.
Actions taken by subject toward police: Seeing the agents positions through his doorbell video camera, Huber shot at them through the closed door, killing Agent Schwartzenberger instantly.
Reactions by the police: Agent Alfin was shot several times but managed to return fire at Huber before dying from his wounds. Several other FBI agents were also wounded in the shooting. The agents maintained a perimeter around the house until discovering Huber killed himself.
How murdered? Agent Alfin was ambushed and shot dead while serving a warrant.
What could have been done differently for the officer to still be alive? Since it was the FBI and computer crimes were involved, they could have killed the electricity to the house moments before the raid. If reconnaissance of the house showed a doorbell or other type surveillance cameras, then the entry officers should have had shields in front of them.
Would the officer had been justified to use deadly force before being murdered? N/A, the agents never saw the armed perpetrator before he fired through the closed door. After being fired upon, the agents did return fire.
Outcome for the cop-killer: Huber killed himself while barricaded within his house after shooting the agents.
