What prompted the initial contact with the killer? At approximately 2:12 a.m. on October 16, 2021, while working security at a bar, Deputy Constables Kareen Atkins and Darrell Garrett were alerted to a possible robbery in the parking lot. The deputies responded to the parking lot, located a possible suspect and were taking him into custody when they were ambushed.

Actions taken by subject toward police: While the deputies were attempting to arrest his accomplice, Eddie Alberto Miller ambushed them from a vehicle he was hiding behind, shooting them with an AR-15 rifle. Deputy Atkins died of his wounds and Deputy Garrett’s lost several organs and has a bullet lodged in his spine.

Reactions by the police: Hearing the gunfire, Deputy Constable Juqaim Barthen ran to the scene and was shot before he even had a chance to unholster his duty weapon. The unknown assailant fled the area, but he has since been identified as Eddie Alberto Miller and after nearly two months of investigative work he was tracked down and arrested.
