What prompted the initial contact with the killer? At approximately 2:15 p.m. on July 7, 2021, Shane Meehan drove his truck up to the gate of the FBI office in Indianapolis and threw a Molotov cocktail at the building.
Actions taken by subject toward police: Detective Ferency, assigned to the FBI Task Force, went outside after the incendiary device went off and was ambushed by Meehan with gunfire.
Reactions by the police: Despite being mortally wounded, Detective Ferency and an FBI agent at the scene returned fire and justifiably shot Meehan. Meehan drove off and was later taken into custody while getting medical attention for his injuries.
How murdered? Detective Ferency was ambushed and fatally shot when responding to an attack upon the FBI building he was in.
What could have been done differently for the officer to still be alive? Given such an extreme attack on the building with the Molotov cocktail, surveillance video of the building entrance could have been used to locate the assailants’ position before running out to engage him. Additionally, such a violent attack would have been a great time for a rifle trained FBI agent/officer to engage the subject from a window/rooftop.
Would the officer have been justified to use deadly force before being murdered? Indications are Det. Ferency did not have time to use deadly force until he was already being shot at by Meehan.
Outcome for the cop-killer: While receiving treatment for his gunshot wounds, Meehan was taken into custody and has been charged with the murder of a federal agent.
Miscellaneous: This is another unprovoked ambush upon our nation’s law enforcement officers coming on the heels of over a year of anti-police vitriol pushed by radical social justice activists.
