Criminal Activity History/Involved: Yes, in 2017 Mire was arrested for a domestic violence incident and pled guilty to “battery of the infirm.”/Yes, Mire was in the midst of a violent crime spree during which, time besides Trooper Gaubert, he shot four other people, killing one woman who was his half-sister.

Mental Illness: During his 2017 violent domestic, Mire threatened to shoot himself and part of his sentence included anger management classes and a mental health evaluation.

Substance Abuse History/Involved: Unknown, but his girlfriend recently died of an overdose. /None stated.

What prompted the initial contact with the killer? At approximately 2:30 a.m. on October 9, 2021, Master Trooper Adam Gaubert was sitting in his marked patrol car, parked in a quiet spot where he was doing paperwork from an accident he just handled.  “

Actions taken by subject toward police: Matthew Mire snuck up on Trooper Gaubert and ambushed him, shooting him dead as he was doing his paperwork in the vehicle. Mire then went to his half-sister’s house nearby, fatally shooting her and seriously wounding her boyfriend before fleeing.

Reactions by the police: Another state trooper engaged in a brief vehicle pursuit with Mire, exchanging shots before losing him. An intense multi-agency manhunt ensued, and Mire was captured and arrested without further incident.

How murdered? Trooper Gaubert was ambushed and fatally shot with a firearm while doing paperwork in his patrol vehicle.

What could have been done differently for the officer to still be alive? Since officers have also been ambushed while doing paperwork when parked at the police station, there is no safe place to do paperwork in public if a violent criminal decides they want to ambush a cop.

Would the officer have been justified to use deadly force before being murdered? N/A, Trooper Gaubert was ambushed and never had a chance to use deadly force.

Outcome for the cop-killer: Mire was arrested and received medical care for a “K-9 bite, and a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound in his leg” which occurred previous to his capture.” He is charged with two counts of murder, “two counts of attempted first-degree murder, theft of a motor vehicle, burglary from a vehicle, and home invasion”, “aggravated flight from an officer, attempted first-degree murder of a police officer”, “illegal possession of stolen firearms, obstruction of justice, and resisting an officer.”
