What prompted the initial contact with the killer? At around 1:20 a.m. on June 1, 2023, Brandon police officers responded to a 911 call about an armed man, Gabriel Wilson, unlawfully entering his ex-girlfriends’ house and holding her and another female hostage.
Actions taken by subject toward police: One female managed to quickly escape and after hours of negotiation with the police, Wilson released the other female. Sometime later, Wilson opened fire on the various law enforcement officers surrounding the house, injuring a Brandon police officer. A few hours later when an assault team entered the house to take Wilson into custody, he shot PO Horren Tyler twice in the chest with a rifle, killing him.
Reactions by the police: Officers returned fire and killed Wilson.
How murdered? PO Tyler was shot while making entrance to the home of a barricaded subject involved in a domestic violence incident.
What could have been done differently for the officer to still be alive? It appears the assault team covertly entered the house, but Wilson was alerted by the drone hitting a ceiling fan.
Would the officer have been justified in using deadly force before being murdered? Officers would have been justified in using deadly force as soon as they saw Wilson holding the rifle.
Outcome for the cop-killer: Wilson was justifiably shot dead during a shootout with the police.
Miscellaneous: There is remarkably little reporting on Wilson’s past criminal, mental health, and substance abuse history.
